About me

Storyteller, researcher, and communicator with 20+ years of experience bringing complex issues and problems to life as a newspaper, public radio and digital journalist.

Most recently I was a reporter for Gothamist and WNYC in New York City reporting, writing, voicing and producing digital and audio coverage of local policy and city issues.

Highlights include:

Environmental social justice — For a series about horrific living conditions in a neglected Brooklyn neighborhood that relies on septic tanks, I conducted field interviews with affected residents and other stakeholders, and analyzed and synthesized the response from multiple city agencies. My audio, photo, and written coverage led to a historic $75 million city investment to improve the area’s infrastructure and wastewater system.

Public education during the pandemic — I led digital coverage of the New York City school system’s response to the pandemic with detailed reporting on policy changes, student and educator mental health, delivery of social services and food security issues, and Asian and Asian-American student reaction to rise in bias crimes. My work included researching and analyzing city budgets, meeting testimonies, and contracts. I conducted field interviews and cultivating sources among educator, student, and city official groups to develop a full picture of evolving crises and solutions.

Inequity in public resources For a story about New York City’s ineffectiveness in combating illegal dumping in lower-income neighborhoods, I analyzed public data about trash complaints to identify hotspots and reached out to relevant stakeholders, community leaders, and elected officials with field interviews and site visits. My coverage yielded direct results and prompted the city to clean up identified areas.

Climate change and renewable energy — For a series about New York City’s efforts to convert organic waste into residential heating gas, I researched and analyzed meeting documents and budgets, and interviewed city and National Grid officials and environmental advocates. My coverage monitored the progress and setbacks of this ambitious renewable energy project as the city reforms how it handles organic waste.

I was previously a staff reporter for Newsday, where I helped launch the paper’s modern iteration of its breaking news team. I was part of a team that was a finalist for the 2008 Public Service Pulitzer Prize, for investigations into the Long Island Rail Road’s platform safety issues.

I’ve also written extensively about sanitation and waste management policy, land use, development, health and science, education, local politics, and the Montauk Monster.

My work has also been published in CityLab, the New York Times, the Village Voice, Seed Magazine, the TimesLedger newspapers, the Gotham Gazette and New York Press.
